Platelets are the power packed ingredients present in the blood required to start the clotting mechanism in case of any bleeding emergency.
Platelets are replaced at the rate of 10% each day; they have a half life of 10 days.
Thrombocytopenia is reduction of platelet in the blood. It is a common clinical disorder. It becomes alarming only if the platelets reduce to 10000 to 25000/cu/mm.
Thrombocytopenia may result from defective production, . defect in manufacturing by the body, or increased consumption, or due to destruction of the platelets.
ITP (immune thrombocytopenic purpura) , acute ITP is mostly seen in children between the age of 2 to 10 years usually after a viral infection and it is self limiting, chronic ITP is seen between the age of 15 to 30 years of age. More present in women, with a relapsing history.
Garlic, cumin, onions, turmeric, clove, black fungus used in Chinese foods are said to produce platelet dysfunction so avoid it.
Certain foods rich in vitamin B12 and folic acid boost the platelet production. Green leafy vegetable soup is also helpful to increase the platelet.
Uncontrolled asthma cuts the oxygen content of the mother's blood. Since the fetus gets its oxygen from the mother's blood, this can lead to decreased oxygen in the fetal blood. The result may impair fetal growth and survival. The fetus requires a constant supply of oxygen for normal growth and development. There is evidence that adequate control of asthma during pregnancy reduces the chances of fetal or newborn death and improves fetal growth inside the uterus. There are no indications that a mother’s asthma contributes to either spontaneous abortion or congenital malformation of the fetus.
Cigarette smoking negatively affects pregnancy in many different ways. The risks appear to be dose dependent. Women who smoke more than 10 to 20 cigarettes a day have almost twice the risk of miscarriage as nonsmokers [19, 20] . Prenatal smoking has been associated with 30% of small-for-gestational-age infants, 10% of preterm infants, and 5% of infant deaths. Cigarette smoking before conception may cause reduced fertility and conception delay among women. Maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy increases the risk for pregnancy complications (., placental previa, placental abruption, and premature rupture of the membrane) and poor pregnancy outcomes (., preterm delivery, restricted fetal growth, and sudden infant death syndrome [SIDS]) [21; 22]. Between 2000 and 2004, an estimated 776 infants died annually from causes attributed to maternal smoking during pregnancy .
