Hydrocortisone is classed as a mild topical corticosteroid. Topical corticosteroids are also referred to as topical steroids . Topical steroids are used in addition to moisturisers (emollients) for treating inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis . A topical steroid can be used to relieve the symptoms when patches of eczema or dermatitis flare up. Hydrocortisone is also useful in reducing inflammation due insect bites and stings . A doctor may also prescribe hydrocortisone to treat nappy rash in a baby or infant.

Scratching can cause severe damage to the skin. The cycle of itching and scratching is very difficult to break. To avoid scratching keep your nails as short as possible and file them down so that the jagged edges don’t further aggravate the skin. Wear gloves when you sleep to prevent scratching at night. Try and keep your skin covered with clothing at most times, as this will offer some protection if you unwittingly scratch at the skin. Pinching or rubbing the skin instead of scratching is another option. Using a high quality moisturizing cream can also prevent scratching as this soothes the skin and relieves itching. Wear clothes made out of smooth breathable fabrics and use a mild detergent to wash. Avoid exposing your skin to any substances that could cause an allergic reaction such as metals, perfume, and beauty products.

This is a rare complication that may occur if a small hole is made in the fibrous sac and does not close up after the needle puncture. These small holes are only made in less than 1% of epidural injections and usually heal on their own. The spinal fluid inside can leak out, and when severe, the brain loses the cushioning effect of the fluid, which causes a severe headache when you sit or stand. These types of headaches occur typically about 2-3 days after the procedure and are positional - they come on when you sit or stand and go away when you lie down. If you do develop a spinal headache, it is OK to treat yourself. As long as you do not feel ill and have no fever and the headache goes away when you lay down, you may treat yourself with 24 hours of bed rest with bathroom privileges while drinking plenty of fluids. This almost always works. If it does not, contact the radiologist who performed the procedure or your referring physician. A procedure (called an epidural blood patch) can be performed in the hospital that has a very high success rate in treating spinal headaches.

1. Moisturizers. Some people cannot tolerate any moisturizer during withdrawal – especially in certain stages of withdrawal, but here are the moisturizers many of our forum members like to use.  Please spot test everything to make sure the skin can tolerate the moisturizers or soaps and remember to only try one new thing at a time. Also note that the skin may accept something for a while and then become irritated at another stage of withdrawal when the same product is applied. Most people find emollients, ointments or balms made with simple ingredients to be more comfortable than creams or lotions.

3. Other treatments that are worth noting
– Wet wrap (I use just one layer, which is known as dry wrap)
– Clean the skin with chlorhexidine gluconate (diluted) before applying steroid cream

Staph bacteria colonizes eczema skin and increasing research link staph to promoting skin inflammation, which in a way is sabotaging the treatment efforts or effect of any prescription if the bacteria is not first reduced
